The first Turks and Caicos underwater maternity shoot that I did was back in 2012 when my wife was expecting our first child, Amy. This photoshoot was for a good friend of ours, Lia, and it was not the first shoot we have done together. We also did Lia and her husband Joe’s wedding and baby announcement photos. Lia and Joe are expecting their first baby in the next few weeks so this was the perfect opportunity to do the underwater maternity shoot.
Before the Shoot
I met with Lia a couple of days prior to the shoot to discuss possible locations and new ideas for something unique. We talked about what Lia would wear, the color fabric we would use and most importantly how Lia would manage her breathing and be comfortable under the water.
The Shoot
We decided to split the photoshoot into two parts. An early morning session at Coral Gardens reef before Grace Bay got busy with tourists and a sunset session at Smith’s Reef. During the early morning session, we wanted to capture the sun’s rays going through the surface of the water but were not fortunate enough to get any of green sea turtles usually found in that area in the shot!
Lia did an amazing job under some quite challenging weather conditions. The water was rather cold and the surface condition was a bit rough due to the wind. However, we had great visibility under the water which made the photos pretty stunning. When we met again for the late afternoon shoot, we looked for a more protected area that would not be so windy. Smith’s reef was the perfect location for some aerial photos taken with our professional drone. Lia braved the cold water for the second time for some split shots capturing the sun setting over the horizon.
Here is a selection of our favorites from the latest Turks and Caicos Underwater Maternity shoot with Lia. We look forward to meeting Lia and Joe’s baby very soon.
